Alumni Greetings: “Encouragement helped me get the job I wanted after graduation”
What is your name?
My name is Nhu Nguyen, and I come from Vietnam.
What did you study at Savonia?
I studied Bachelor of Business Administration, International Business from 2016 to 2020.
What is your current profession?
I am working as a Marketing Automation Specialist at F-Secure.
Which three words best describe your study experience?
In my experience, it was flexible (I was able to balance studying and working my part-time job), exciting (the exchange opportunity with Erasmus was a highlight for me!), and full of opportunities for growth (there were many academic and non-academic projects to take part in).
Do you have any special memories, experiences, or stories from your time as a student that you would like to share with us?
I found it fascinating that in Finland, you can casually call your teachers by their first names without using titles like “Mr./Madam/Sir/Professor.” This reflects the equality in Finnish society, which is amazing. It makes talking to your teachers and expressing your opinions much easier.
What was your biggest challenge during your studies, and how did you overcome it?
Looking for an internship was a bit challenging. However, thanks to the help of my home teacher who recommended me for a project, I got my first internship. Another teacher encouraged me to take the opportunity, even though I wasn’t sure if it aligned with my career path, because it might lead me to what I wanted later—and he was right. Thanks to the encouragement of various teachers and professionals at the university, I gained valuable advice and experience that helped me get the job I wanted after graduation.
What is the most important skill you have learned during your higher education studies?
The most important skill I learned during my school days was to be proactive and resourceful. Always look for answers in different places—friends, seniors, teachers, the library, the internet, etc. There is a solution to every problem—you just have to look hard enough.
What is your biggest dream or goal now that you have graduated?
Right now, I am looking to move to France to be united with my husband (whom I met during the exchange)!
What do you want to be when you grow up – what are your future aspirations?
I hope to be a decent person, and I hope to earn well enough money so that I can take care of myself and my loved ones when needed.
Any good tips for future students?
The job market is becoming more challenging, so it’s a good idea to start building your portfolio early. By the time you graduate and start looking for jobs, having at least one or two references could give you a head start. Also, put effort into your school work and consistently produce high-quality work— just doing this might open up opportunities you didn’t even know existed.
