Applying study right based on previous studies

You can apply to Savonia UAS in the separate application if you have completed previous studies in a Finnish UAS or university and if you fulfill one of the cases below 1-5. Studies may have been completed at a Finnish UAS, university, Open UAS or Open University, but they cannot be part of a completed degree or active study right.

  1. You have completed 60 ECTS for bachelor’s degree at Savonia Open UAS (Open path studies), and you want to become a degree student. 
  2. You have completed 10 ECTS (60 credits’ degree) or 30 ECTS (90 credits’ degree) for master’s degree at Savonia UAS, and you want to become a degree student. 
  3. You have unfinished bachelor’s / master’s degree and you have completed all the studies missing from the degree at Savonia Open UAS. You can graduate immediately. 
  4. You have completed in a Finnish UAS or University 60 ECTS or more for bachelor’s degree and are applying to become a degree student. Completed studies can be, for example, part of an unfinished bachelor’s degree. 
  5. You have completed in a Finnish UAS or University 10 ECTS (60 credits’ degree) or 30 ECTS (90 credits’ degree) for master’s degree and are applying to become a degree student. Completed studies can be, for example, part of an unfinished master’s degree.

If you do not fulfill any of the above mentioned cases, you may apply to Savonia UAS in the Joint application period.

If you have a valid degree study right at some Finnish UAS or University and want to apply for transfer to Savonia UAS, please see instructions how to apply for transfer.

Applying

Two application periods:

  • if you are applying during 1 October – 31 December and your application is accepted, your studies begin in spring term
  • if you are applying during 1 April – 31 August and your application is accepted, your studies begin in autumn term.

Application form is available at Studyinfo. Before filling in the application form, please check if you fulfill one of the grounds for applying, mentioned above. Also, please make sure that you have all necessary attachments ready, because you must upload them to the application form at the same time you are filling in the application form.

Decision on application

Your application form will be processed within one month from receiving it. Please follow your email as you may be asked for more information to support your application.  Please note, that applications will not be handled during holidays (summer, week 42 and Christmas time).

The decision is sent to you by email. In case the study right is granted, you will have 7 days’ time to confirm the study place. In case the study right cannot be granted, you will be informed about the decision by e-mail.

Detailed criteria and issues to consider on each case

1. You have completed 60 ECTS for bachelor’s degree at Savonia Open UAS (Open path studies), and you want to become a degree student.

  • You may apply to become a degree student as soon as you have completed 60 credits at Savonia Open UAS. 
  • You do not have to submit any attachments, we can check your completed studies directly from the student management system. 
  • If you apply to become a degree student immediately you have completed required studies, you will be granted the study right. 
  • If you apply to become a degree student later, your eligibility to apply will be assessed and your completed studies will be compared to the valid curriculum. 

2. You have completed 10 ECTS (60 credits’ degree) or 30 ECTS (90 credits’ degree) for master’s degree at Savonia Open UAS, and you want to become a degree student.

  • You may apply to become a degree student as soon as you have completed 10/30 credits at Savonia Open UAS. 
  • You must submit copies of those certificates which prove your eligibility to apply to master’s degree in question: suitable bachelor’s / master’s degree and at least 2 years of work experience from the field of the master’s degree in question. Please check the requirements from Savonia UAS website 
  • Your studies and eligibility to apply is assessed when you apply. Requirements for background education and work experience, as well as curricula may change. 

3. You have unfinished bachelor’s / master’s degree and you have completed all the studies missing from the degree at Savonia Open UAS. You can graduate immediately.

  • If you have completed all studies (unfinished degree and open UAS studies) at Savonia UAS, you do not have to submit any attachments. If you have completed your studies at some other Finnish UAS, please submit copies of transcripts.  
  • If you are applying to master’s degree, please submit copies of those certificates which prove your eligibility to apply to master’s degree in question: suitable bachelor’s / master’s degree and at least 2 years of work experience from the field of the master’s degree in question. Please check the requirements from Savonia UAS website 
  • Your studies will be assessed together with the student counsellor of the study field in question. 

4. You have completed at a Finnish UAS or University 60 ECTS or more for bachelor’s degree and are applying to become a degree student. Completed studies can be, for example, part of an unfinished bachelor’s degree.

  • You must have at least 60 credits of such studies which  can be included to the degree programme you are applying to. Please compare your studies to the curriculum in question and make a preliminary study plan. Attach course-specific links to the course descriptions in the study plan. If descriptions are not available electronically, attach copies of the course descriptions to the application. The study plan must include the studies that you use as the basis for your application.
    • You will find the curricula from Savonia UAS website, at first please choose the campus and then choose the newest curriculum in question.
    • Save the study plan form to your computer, fill it in and attach to y our application
  • In general, study right can only be granted once based on the same studies. 

5. You have completed at a Finnish UAS or University 10 ECTS (60 credits’ degree) or 30 ECTS (90 credits’ degree) for master’s degree and are applying to become a degree student. Completed studies can be, for example, part of an unfinished master’s degree.

  • Studies must be such as they can be included to the degree programme you are applying to. Please compare your studies to the curriculum in question and make a preliminary study plan. Attach course-specific links to the course descriptions in the study plan. If descriptions are not available electronically, attach copies of the course descriptions to the application. The study plan must include the studies that you use as the basis for your application. The study plan must state that the completed studies are master level studies. Bachelor level studies cannot be accepted when applying to master’s degree.
    • You will find the curricula from Savonia UAS website, at first please choose the campus and then choose the newest curriculum in question
    • Save the study plan form to your computer, fill it in and attach to your application.
  • You must submit copies of those certificates which prove your eligibility to apply to master’s degree in question: suitable bachelor’s / master’s degree and at least 2 years of work experience from the field of the master’s degree in question.   • In general, study right can only be granted once based on the same studies. 

Things to consider when applying study right

One study place per term provision

This separate application is included in the one study place per term provision. If you are eligible to apply in this application and if you will be granted the study place, you cannot accept another study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland during the same academic term.

Health requirements and aptitude in the field of health care and social services

Legislation relating to aptitude in the field of health care and social services

Legislation applies to education leading to a degree in applied sciences in the field of health care and social services, the humanities, physical exercise and maritime navigation. These fields have requirements concerning the safety of minors, patient and customer safety or traffic safety which restrict student admission.

In the field of health care and social services the studies include working with customer groups requiring special protection, in which case ethical requirements and requirements for patient or customer safety are crucial. The health and functional capacity of students shall be such that they are capable of performing assignments and practical training related to their studies.

Those applying to the field should bear in mind that:

  • studying and working in a profession of this field requires sufficient physical, mental and social capacity
  • the field of health care and social services is not suitable for individuals convicted of one of the following: offences against children, sexual offences, violent offences, crimes against freedom, or drug offences
  • the field is not suitable for those who have been drug or alcohol abusers during the last two years
  • conditions such as musculoskeletal diseases, chronic skin diseases, allergies and mental health disorders may lead to health issues during studies or later on in working life
  • blood-borne illnesses may restrict practical training and, after graduation, the students’ placement in work assignments
  • many health care and social services operating units care for patients/clients susceptible to infections, and in order to work at these units, students and staff must have up-to-date vaccination cover (e.g. measles, chicken pox, whooping cough). In addition, annual influenza vaccination is required. The required vaccinations are free of charge for students in the field of health care and social services.

Applicants are required to provide information concerning their health status and functional capacity as required to assess admission at the request of the university of applied sciences concerned, as well as information on any possible prior decision on cancellation of their study entitlement.

Students are required to produce an extract from criminal records at the request of the university of applied sciences if working with minors forms an essential part of the tasks assigned to them during their studies or work placement periods that are part of their studies.

Universities of applied sciences are entitled to require a student to produce a certificate of a drugs test if there is any reason to suspect that the student is under the influence of drugs during practical assignments or during a work placement that is part of their studies, or that the student is addicted to drugs.

Tuition fee

Savonia UAS collects tuition fees from non EU/EEA students.

If you are obligated to pay the tuition fee, you will receive instructions on how to pay the tuition fee.

Bachelor students are entitled for the Early Bird tuition fee if they:

  • confirm the study place within 7 days of being accepted as a student, and
  • pay the tuition fee within 14 days of being accepted as a student.

FSHS healthcare fee

Degree students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences are entitled to get health care services from the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS / YTHS). FSHS’s services are available for all degree students on Savonia’s campuses including Iisalmi and Varkaus.

All present degree students (Bachelor, Master) must pay the FSHS healthcare fee to Kela. Please note! You will not be sent an invoice to pay the FSHS fee, but you have to make the payment on your own initiative.
