DescriptionThe aim of the project is to promote the employment of immigrants with higher education backgrounds. The goal is pursued both within the universities of applied sciences (UAS) and in workplaces where UAS students seek internships and potential employment after graduation. The project develops models of bilingual pedagogy and bilingual internship as well as practices within UAS education that strengthen the ability of staff to work multilingually, culturally sensitively, and to develop the Finnish language skills of international students. In terms of the working life, the aim is to support workplace receptiveness.

The project is important to implement because the number of foreign-language students in higher education, especially in their English-language degree programs, has increased in recent years and continues to rise. Foreign-background individuals with higher education degrees are more likely than representatives of the native population to end up unemployed or in jobs that do not match their education, which may lead to the underutilization of skills acquired in Finland or their migration out of the country, resulting in a brain drain. When skilled individuals are excluded from the workforce or move abroad, it exacerbates labor shortages and slows down economic growth. Experiences of injustice and marginalization can also increase societal tensions.

As a result of the project, the ability of universities of applied sciences to respond to the needs of the growing immigrant population has been strengthened through the development of a bilingual pedagogy model and a bilingual internship model for English-language degrees that can be utilized across different fields. Bilingual study modules have been piloted, where S2 (second language) instruction is integrated into subject teaching, and the bilingualism and language awareness competence of university teaching staff has been developed. Immigrant students benefit from this development of expertise in both English and Finnish language programs.
