DescriptionAccording to a report compiled by the Oulu University of Applied Sciences in 2019, the treatment of waste center water follows a basic formula, where the area's dirtier leachate and stormwater is led to the wastewater treatment plant and cleaner stormwater is discharged (through monitoring the concentrations of harmful substances) into the surrounding ditches. In some cases, such as the Peitto recycling park, the area has its own wastewater treatment plant.

Whether the waste center treated its water itself or sent it to a public treatment plant, the focus so far has been on cleaning the water, i.e. avoiding environmental pollution. Little attention has been paid to nutrient recovery. LUKE stated in his report in 2017: "Although all sewage sludge is processed, the methods are not designed from the point of view of nutrient recycling." The important nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus are usually separated from wastewater without the possibility of utilization. In the nitrification-denitrification process commonly used for nitrogen removal, the nitrogen evaporates into the atmosphere. Phosphorus is precipitated in the sludge with iron salt, and it cannot be removed chemically in a usable form.

The key novelty values of the project are related to the following:
• Building a symbiotic, nutrient recovery network
• Nitrogen capture instead of evaporation into the atmosphere
• Recovery of phosphorus in a reusable form
• Creating a replicable, techno-economically functional operating model for waste centers that have the same
situation
